"She's continued to receive multiple awards - she's received nearly every award imaginable and now to get the Pulitzer Prize, it's just wonderful", Sabrina Owens, Franklin's niece and the executor of her estate, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday. The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, got a special citation for its coverage of a gun attack in the newsroom that claimed five staff members.

Aretha Franklin was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize's Special Citation, the prestigious journalism and the arts organization announced Monday.

Similarly, novelist Richard Powers won the fiction prize for "The Overstory", a multi-narrative look at nine Americans who are brought together unfolding natural catastrophe.
