Nepal: At least three killed in airplane collision in Solukhumbu

Three people were killed and four others injured when a small passenger plane collided with a parked helicopter in Nepal Sunday.

The crash occurred while the Summit Air plane was trying to take off from Lukla for Kathmandu, said aviation officials.

S Dhungana, co-pilot of the plane, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Bahadur Khadka, who was stationed at the helipad, were killed in the incident, Tribhuvan International Airport spokesperson Pratap Babu Tiwari was quoted as saying by the paper. Hoards of people gathered around the aircraft wreckage following the crash as debris was strewn on the ground. According to AP, the helicopter was owned by Manang Air, another local airline.

"Another police officer died in a hospital in Kathmandu".

"We are not sure about the cause of the accident".

The injured were airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter, Nepal police spokesman Uttam Raj Subedi said.

The four passengers and a flight attendant were safe.

A report quoting Suman Pandey, chief executive officer (CEO) at Fish Tail Air, stated that the incident took place at around 9:10 am at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, a major gateway to Mt Everest.

Sitting at an elevation of 2,845 metres, it is used by thousands of trekkers and climbers heading for the Everest region each year.
