Police have arrested four people following attacks that took place in two Muslim places of worship in Christchurch on Friday afternoon (local time).

Young children are among the 48 people wounded in the attack and are being treated for gunshot wounds.

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old white Australian, allegedly issued the command in a document he posted online before the shootings in New Zealand began.

A police presence has been placed at mosques around the country and ramped up throughout Christchurch.

Three men and one woman are in custody. The suspect will appear in the Christchurch court on March 16. Seven were killed at the Linwood mosque nearby, and one victim passed away at the hospital.

Owners of firearms in New Zealand are required to have a license but they are not required to register their firearms, unlike in Australia. "I know there is a name within the public domain but it would be improper for me now to confirm that because a person has been charged", the police commissioner said during the press conference.

That said, the two countries are dramatically different in size, with New Zealand having a population of less than 4.8 million people while the US has an estimated 327.2 million people, but the gun violence rates are notably different when looked at with comparitive sizes.
