First person on Mars likely to be a woman: Nasa chief

There is much more of our satellite just waiting to be studied, as the space agency knows from remote sensing that has told scientists about the complexity of what looks like a deceptively simple cosmic object. While that is about $550 million below what was expected, NASA will get $263 million more than a year ago.

But NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine told a Senate hearing that the "SLS is struggling to meet its schedule" and won't be ready in time for the EM-1 mission.

KSC Director Bob Cabana said he is excited about the future. More recently, scientists have detected water molecules on Moon using data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The 2013 class - featuring Anne McClain and Christina Koch, the two women selected for the upcoming spacewalk - was an even 50 per cent split of men and women.

The administration of President Donald Trump has made it clear that it is unhappy with all the delays.

Bridenstine says NASA will decide in the next couple weeks whether to stick with its rocket and delay - or go commercial for this one test flight. "Some of those options would include launching the Orion crew capsule and European Service Module on a commercial rocket". "All of the above". NASA wants to have the Gateway up and running by 2024.

"It is about having a sustainable human presence on and around the moon", he insisted. "And we are looking forward to the first woman on the moon", he said.

Earth's Moon was once assumed to be a dry and dusty place, but over time that image has changed.

The Coalition for Deep Space Exploration is a national organization of more than 60 space industry businesses and advocacy groups focused on ensuring the United States remains a leader in space, science and technology.

Researchers have hypothesized that hydrogen ions in the solar wind may be the source of most of the Moon's surface water.

"We have fantastic capability that exists right now that we can use off the shelf in order to accomplish this objective", he said.

Nasa has been working hard to try and develop the technology needed to send humans to Mars in the 2030s.
