At least 8 people, attackers dead after school shooting in Brazil

Two assailants opened fire Wednesday in a school near Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing eight people and wounding 15 others, state military police said.

Police work at the scene of a shooting at a school in Suzano, Sao Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil.

Salles added the gunmen, who police said appeared to be between the ages of 20 and 25 years old, used at least one.38-calibre pistol, along with homemade bombs and a crossbow.

At least 17 other people, mostly children, were also shot and taken to hospital, police said in a written statement.

Facebook, Instagram And WhatsApp Are Down
Due to the outage advertisers are losing money and it seems that the company is planning to issue refunds to the advertisers. Facebook and Instagram are having technical issues as users reported problems with the social media sites Wednesday.

About 1,000 children attend the school, police said.

Far right President Jair Bolsonaro passed a law allowing people to carry arms soon after assuming power in January, delivering on a campaign promise. Before Wednesday, the last school shooting in Brazil occurred in 2011 when 12 children were killed by a former student in a Rio de Janeiro school.

Security cameras from homes near the school showed children climbing and jumping over a white wall that surrounds the Raul Brasil building, and sprinting down streets, screaming for help.

After shooting at students in the yard, the attackers headed to the language centre where several pupils were hiding and "committed suicide in a corridor", Sales said.

At Miami International Airport, American Airlines was forced to cancel 19 flights Wednesday, said airport spokesman Jack Varela. Travel company Kayak said it would allow passengers to filter flights by the type of plane used, CNN reported on Wednesday.

The names and identities of the victims and the attacks have yet to be released and the motive for the attack is not clear.

Gun crime is extremely common in Brazil but school shootings are rare. The gunmen took their own lives, officials said.

Police arrived eight minutes after the shooting started, and the attackers were already dead, Salles said. Castro's body lay near Monteiro's, with the crossbow on the ground between the pair.

Besides the five students, the dead included a teacher and a school administrator, said Joao Camilo Pires de Campos, the state's public secretary. "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
