Police receive redacted phone records from Jussie Smollett regarding reported attack

Actor Jussie Smollett on Tuesday dismissed any suggestion that he has been less than cooperative with police since the star of the "Empire" television drama reported he was attacked by two masked men in Chicago last month.

But, Police say smollett will be held accountable if the investigation reveals he filed a false report.

Since the January 29 incident, Chicago police have not been able to identify any legitimate suspects in the case or find any surveillance video capturing the attack on film.

"He's very much still considered a victim and the investigation continues".

Smollett told authorities he was on the phone with his manager when he was attacked.

It is unclear if it's related to the attack. Then, hours later, there were two "persons of interest" on video.

But while Smollett had a change of heart and gave police redacted phone records, the department said they are insufficient.

Cops requested Smollett's phone records to confirm statements that he was on a call with his manager Brandon Z. He reportedly told police that the men used racial and homophobic slurs before beating him, pouring what may have been bleach onto him, and leaving a noose around his neck before proclaiming, "This is MAGA country", as they left.

Smollett has already agreed to surrender his phone records and is in the process of gathering them, according to TMZ.

Threatening letters directed at Smollett were reportedly sent to Fox Studios in Chicago a week before.

The AP added that Chicago has one of the nation's most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses, and in train tunnels - and that police said such cameras have helped them make thousands of arrests.

A spokesperson for Chicago police added that the department was "appreciative" Smollett chose to cooperate with the investigation, but they'll likely be asking him for more phone records in order to properly review the case.
