Robinson agreed with Lopez and stood by Grammy organisers who selected the Latina star to perform, calling the backlash "stupid". Motown was a black-owned record label that put out music by predominantly black artists like the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.

Lopez also opened up about her performance on the Grammy red carpet, telling Ryan Seacrest that she wanted to dedicate the performance to her mother.

So why was she selected to deliver a performance honoring a legendary label that's largely featured black artists? "I could cry. But despite being joined on stage by Smokey Robinson, Alicia Keys and her fellow "World of Dance" judge Ne-Yo, Lopez's performance was a dud for many people watching at home, who previously expressed irritation with a non-Black performer headlining the tribute.
