Trump warns Turkey faces 'economic devastation' if Kurds attacked

Earlier, US Department of Defense Spokesperson Dana White confirmed earlier that the United States are pulling out their troops from Syria, adding that the US military is transitioning to the next phase of their campaign against ISIS.

Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan publicly lashed out at USA national security adviser John Bolton for saying the United States withdrawal was contingent upon Turkey's pledge not to attack US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria once troops leave.

Donald Trump has warned its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally to beware of the devastative wrath of USA economic pressure if Turkey dares to attack the Kurdish allies America is leaving behind in its "long overdue" pull-out of troops from Syria.

When Pompeo said earlier this month that the USA wants to ensure "the Turks don't slaughter the Kurds", Turkey denounced Pompeo, saying he exhibited "a worrying lack of information".

"Turkey fights against terrorists, not Kurds".

Cavusoglu once again "rejected and condemned" Bolton's comments on the conditional withdrawal and said despite different voices coming out from Washington, the Turkish president's interlocutor was Trump.

"We also know that those fighting alongside us for all this time deserve to be protected as well", he added.

More than 2,000 USA troops are serving in Syria.

Since Trump's announcement, senior members of his administration including Bolton and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo have frustrated Turkey by setting more specific conditions on what Trump initially suggested would be a quick withdrawal.

"We are confident we can achieve an outcome that achieves both of those", Pompeo told journalists in Abu Dhabi.

But a USA defense official has denied that it was withdrawing any troops from Syria, telling VOA the initial stages of the pull-out involve "equipment, not troops".

Just because a "couple thousand uniform personnel" will be leaving Syria, Pompeo said, doesn't mean that USA interests have changed.
