Jayme Closs: authorities search for motive in 'tragic' kidnapping case

A 21-year-old man has been charged with murdering the parents of an American teen as part of a calculated plot to kidnap her, police said Friday, after 13-year-old Jayme Closs was found alive following three months in captivity. Her abduction led to an intense search that ended Thursday when she was found alive - and Patterson arrested - about 70 miles from her home.

Patterson is unemployed, although worked for one day at the Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron, where the Closs' worked for 27 years.

As FOX 9 learned Saturday, however, nobody knew them well. "Jayme was the champion that finally said enough is enough", Fitzgerald said. "So, we're looking for receipts, where the suspect may have been over the last 88 days". "But I'd also tell her that there is no going back to who she was before she was kidnapped, before this happened".

Patterson's lawyers Charles Glynn and Richard Jones said in a statement they consider the situation "very tragic" and that they are relying on the court system to treat their client fairly.

As Jayme begins to process her trauma, experts and former victims say what she needs most is space and time to discuss it on her own terms.

"We don't really know what shape she's in", he added.

On Thursday, Jayme escaped the rural home where she was being held.

Elizabeth Smart, the Utah woman who was held for nine months when she was 14 years old, told NBC News she was "so excited" to hear that Jayme had been found.

What's unclear, however, is how and why Patterson - from the remote community of Gordon two counties from Barron - allegedly chose Jayme for kidnapping.

"Jayme had a pretty good night sleep it was great to know she was next to me all night what a great feeling to have her home", Smith said.

Officials say Closs is doing well after having been missing from the Barron area since October 15.

"Jayme is the hero in this case, there's no question about it", he said.

Investigators are trying to determine how Jayme escaped from Patterson's home, Fitzgerald said.

Closs vanished October 15 after her parents were gunned down inside their home in Barron County, located about 80 miles northeast of Minneapolis. "It was a lot of sleepless nights". A 911 call was placed from Denise Closs's cell phone.

Police arrived to find the door kicked in, Jayme missing and her parents dead.

- In the town of Gordon, Wisconsin, investigators continue to comb through evidence in the home of Jake Patterson Saturday - the same home from which Jayme Closs escaped roughly two days ago.

Jayme told one of the neighbors in Gordon who took her in that she had walked away from a cabin where she had been held.

Residents who knew Patterson described him as quiet. She told cops she met him three weeks earlier on an "online chat site".

"She just yelled, 'Please help me!" Officers arrested Patterson minutes later.

Mr Fitzgerald noted police information was "limited" and Jayme was still being interviewed, but she had been medically cleared and released from hospital.

Local teacher Jeanne Nutter was walking her dog when she found Jayme on Thursday.

"He didn't know Jayme, he didn't know Denise or Jim", Naiberg said.

"I don't know her but I have been praying for her". So now, "she needs to feel.in control and experience her memories in a way that. doesn't retrigger" her trauma.
