Winter Storm Gia Causing Snow Emergency Across The Country

The storm moved into Kansas and Nebraska from the Rockies on Friday, then east into Missouri and IL. Major cities in the zone, including St. Louis, could get more than 6 inches of snow.

The Weather Channel reported that almost 500 weather-related motor vehicle accidents had been reported in Missouri.

Washington and Baltimore will likely see 2 to 4 inches of snow and Philadelphia 1 to 2 inches.

The storm is leaving its heaviest snowfall on areas west of St. Louis, where about a foot and a half of snow was recorded, with still more falling on Saturday, Orrison said.

"We have a strong snowstorm that's stretching 1,400 miles from Kansas to the East Coast", CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said. 25 cm are in the forecast for Washington, D.C., which finds itself in the storm's sights for Sunday.

Gia is expected to bring additional snow to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic by Sunday evening, the Weather Channel reported.

"There's snow time like Showtime", the Chiefs said on Twitter, sharing video of the team's quarterback Patrick Mahomes arriving at the stadium in the snow.

The hardest-hit airport was St. Louis, where more than 115 combined arrivals and departures were canceled as more than 12 inches (30 centimeters) of snow fell in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for Missouri, as well as IL and Indiana.

There is a small chance that the southern Appalachians get enough freezing rain and sleet to turn into an ice event Saturday into Sunday.

Missouri's governor Mike Parson said on Twitter that he had been briefed by public safety agencies and warned drivers to stay off the roads "as our dedicated road and emergency crews continue to fight this storm".

The University of Missouri men's basketball game Saturday at the University of SC was moved to Sunday because of weather-related travel problems, the team tweeted.
