Police Seek DNA Where Comatose Woman Gave Birth

Today, Phoenix Police investigators served a search warrant to obtain DNA from male Hacienda HealthCare staffers.

Phoenix police are now asking for the public's help in the case of an incapacitated woman who delivered a baby at a care facility last month.

Police launched a rape investigation after being called to the facility on December 29 regarding an infant who had been "coded".

The woman and the baby boy have been recovering at a hospital.

Her family, who are members of the San Carlos Apache tribe in south-eastern Arizona, said in a statement through their lawyer that they will care for the baby boy.

"We will continue to co-operate with Phoenix police and all other investigative agencies to uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing, but unprecedented situation", it said in a statement.

A week after the victim gave birth, Phoenix police have still released next to nothing about the investigation.

Hacienda HealthCare confirmed the search warrant for DNA samples Tuesday evening.

Local news website first reported that the woman in a vegetative state for more than 10 years after a near-drowning had given birth.

The 29-year-old woman has been in a persistent vegetative state since nearly drowning over a decade ago, and can not move or communicate.

"The family is outraged, traumatized and shocked by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda HealthCare", he said.

The woman went into labor a few days before New Year's, perplexing her caretakers.

Hacienda Healthcare serves approximately 2,500 people a year with 40 programs, according to a statement from the facility officials.

The facility specializes in providing around-the-clock care for infants, children and young adults with developmental disabilities or who are "medically fragile".

Lawyer John Micheaels, representing the woman's family, described her as being in a "completely vulnerable state". They also say she was still in a coma when she gave birth.

Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons stood down on Monday amid the deepening scandal.

Police have declined to comment on the investigation. After being assured by administrators that staffers "have been counseled on privacy during showering residents", the state issued a follow-up report in January 2018 which concluded those and other deficiencies uncovered by investigators "have been corrected".

The state's online complaint database for care facilities shows multiple complaints about Hacienda de Los Angeles going back to 2013.

The Arizona Department of Health Services said it was aware of the allegations and would conduct an inspection of the center, which is about 7 miles south of downtown Phoenix. "We also don't have required training for providers", McFadden said.
