Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify in front of Congress

Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify in front of Congress

The lawyer has cooperated with Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the election since a year ago, which has prompted anger from the president.

"This is a watershed moment", Cummings said, invoking Dean, who he said "changed the course of America" with his testimony.

It's not yet clear what specific topics might be off limits. Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House intelligence committee, also said he would be seeking a closed door hearing with Cohen. "If you are going to provide a platform for this convicted felon and perjurer, we ought to ensure we have the necessary information to prepare to question him". "He hasn't agreed but I think there's a good likelihood". Trump has denied directing Cohen to pay women who alleged affairs with Trump. Asked by The Washington Post's Philip Rucker on Thursday whether he was concerned about Cohen's testimony, Trump said: "I'm not anxious about it at all".

Speier said, "So what I've been told is that Mr. Cohen wants to tell his full story, so it will probably be outside of the issues relative to the campaign in which he was directed to make these payments".

"It was because time and time again I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds rather than to listen to my own inner voice and my moral compass", he said.

GM has claimed its restructuring plan, including the plant closures, stands to save the company US$6 billion annually. It was also unclear if any work stoppages would coincide with a Unifor rally in Windsor, Ontario on Friday.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison December 12 by U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, who was made chairman of the committee after Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives, made the announcement Thursday.

"We don't want to do anything to interfere with the Mueller investigation - absolutely nothing", Cummings said.

Trump has denied any collusion with Russian Federation, saying the investigation is a political witch hunt that has not produced evidence in two years.

At the time of Cohen's sentencing, federal authorities announced a deal not to prosecute American Media Inc.

Cohen also admitted lying to Congress about Trump's involvement in a plan to build a Trump Tower in the Russian capital, a plan which was later scrapped.

Individual 1 was a reference to Trump.

Trump's legal team has repeatedly called Cohen as a liar.

Before they lost the majority, House Republicans had wanted to interview Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, about reports he suggested secretly recording Trump in an attempt to remove the president from office.

It was unclear if Cohen's agreement to testify before the Oversight Committee will preclude appearances, in public or private, before other House panels.

"I'm hoping that Mr. Cohen will come before the Congress, where he can tell the American public exactly what he has been saying to Mueller and others, without interfering with the Mueller investigation", Cummings said. He added, "As a lawyer, Mr. Cohen should have known better". If he had not, House Democrats would have likely used their new subpoena power.
