US Senate Democrats Block Bill on New Sanctions Against Syria Over Shutdown

The bill is unlikely to move forward in the Republican-controlled Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has dismissed it as political theater. It includes two measures popular with the centrist and right-wing pro-Israel communities: One codifies $38 billion in defense assistance for Israel for the next 10 years, the other protects states that pass bills targeting Israel boycotters from being sued.

The Anti-Defamation League released a statement in response to Tlaib's tweet: 'Representative Tlaib's tweet regarding the pending bill on the Senate floor has been interpreted by some as suggesting that Jews or Members of Congress, such as the sponsors of the bill, are more loyal to Israel than to their own country, ' the organization said.

"This is the mentality of these people: They hate Israel", she says bluntly.
