Second man charged with capital murder of Jazmine Barnes, 7

HOUSTON (AP) - Texas authorities filed a capital murder charge Tuesday against a black man they believe fired the bullet that killed a 7-year-old black girl in a drive-by shooting her family initially believed was racially motivated.

A tip helped authorities identify Larry Demetricus Woodruffe, 24, and Eric Black Jr., 20, as suspects in the December 30 shooting. Prosecutors identified Larry Woodruffe as the second suspect in a court hearing Saturday, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Shaun King, a journalist and activist who previously wrote for the New York Daily News, has said on social media that he passed along a tip he received after writing about the case online, which Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters on Sunday helped lead investigators to Black.

Jazmine Barnes was being remembered Tuesday at The Community of Faith in Houston. The girl's mother, LaPorsha Washington, was shot in the arm and the girl's 15-year-old sister was injured when the window shattered.

Jazmine was killed riding in a auto with her mother and three sisters more than a week ago.

Rare coin found in boy's lunchbox worth $2.4 million
But as his health declined previous year , Lutes chose to sell the coin, said Peter Karpenski, a friend and fellow coin collector. Those planchets went unnoticed when the bins were refilled with zinc-coated steel planchets in 1943, Heritage Auctions said.

The driver of the SUV Woodruffe rode in, 20-year-old Eric Black Jr. has also been charged with capital murder.

Authorities say Woodruffe and Black mistakenly thought they were attacking people they'd previously fought at a club hours earlier when they shot at Jazmine and her family. Authorities now say that same white man in the red truck was likely a witness at the scene who sped away when the shooting started.

Black is being held without bail on capital murder charges.

Black was pulled over for not using his turn signal and was initially arrested for marijuana possession, according to details released in an affidavit in a Harris County court this morning.

Based on the investigation, authorities believe that the shooting was a sad case of mistaken identity. He gave officers permission to search for it and they found a 9mm pistol consistent with shell casings recovered from the scene.

He suggested the issue could be resolved in a quick meeting, but past discussions at the White House have not ended the stalemate. He appealed to Congress to end "this crisis" and for every American to "call Congress" and tell them to "secure our border".

"When Jazmine Barnes was killed I pledged to find who killed her".

Washington thanked everyone who came to honor her daughter, whose birthday is next month, she said.

Jazmine's short, white casket could be seen covered in flowers as pallbearers rolled it into the church ahead of the funeral.

"I just want everyone to like, back off", she told the station. "I can get up in the morning". Lee Merritt, an attorney hired by the Barnes' family, said the family is relieved that the real killers are in custody.
