Store Wars: Epic Games Takes on Valve, Google with Own Games Store

The store's revenue share model makes it attractive for publishers who might upload their games to the Epic Games Store and to Steam to reach a wider audience.

The relationship with game developers seems to be the Store's main selling point.

According to a report by GamesIndustry, Epic Games is launching a competitor to Steam.

Last week, Valve announced changes to the revenue split within the Steam Store, cutting its take as a game's profit steadily increases.

Epic Games announced Tuesday that the Epic Games store is coming soon to PC and Mac, with eventual plans to also come to Android as well as other "open platforms" in 2019.

MCV talked to Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney about the new store. The new tiered system adjusts the revenue share to 75%/25% and 80%/20% when game earnings exceed $10 million and $50 million on Steam.

The aim of the tweaks to the Steam commission structure is to provide a bigger incentive for the big games companies to stick with the platform, rather than set-up their own.

The move could be announced as early as this week, according to The Verge , which earlier reported on Microsoft's plans. It has been committing code to the Chromium project, pushing Chrome closer towards running on an ARM processor.

Steam was originally a form of digital rights management (DRM) produced by Valve Software in a bid to protect its own games from piracy.
