Outrage after first women's Ballon d'Or victor Ada Hegerberg asked to twerk

Moments after Ada Hegerberg became the first female recipient of the Ballon d'Or on Tuesday morning, she was asked to answer some questions from DJ Martin Solveig.

But the historic moment was tarnished after French DJ Martin Solveig, a presenter at the Paris gala, asked the soccer star if she wanted to twerk on stage, prompting gasps in the crowd.

Solveig later offered his "sincere apologies" and Hegerberg said he also said sorry to her personally, but she dismissed suggestions that the incident had marred her evening.

"I got to dance a bit and I got the Ballon d'Or ... Watch the full sequence, people who have followed me for 20 years know how respectful I am especially with women".

Hegerberg finished last season as the French league's top scorer with 31 goals and netted 15 in the Champions League as Lyon went on to win the competition.

"It's all about how we respect women's football". Hegerberg claims the women's game has been shown a lack of respect amid low investment and player wages, causing her to step back from the national team indefinitely.

The comment sparked outrage on social media, with many users calling the remarks "sexist", and Solveig released an apology on Twitter shortly after. "I of course didn't want to offend anyone", he said.
