Former FBI Director James Comey to testify privately Friday

Former FBI Director James Comey to testify privately Friday

After an initial hearing on the challenge Friday, U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden did not rule but indicated he was unlikely to grant Comey's motion. "Hard to protect my rights without being in contempt, which I don't believe in", Comey wrote in a Twitter post. He said Republicans, who lead the committee, told him he's free to speak afterward and that a transcript would be released a day later.

In a Sunday morning appearance on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures", House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., previewed Comey's move, telling host Maria Bartiromo that he expected Comey would withdraw his motion.

The testimony will center on an investigation by Goodlatte and other House Republicans into the FBI and Justice Department's handlings of probes into former Secretary of State's Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Comey had sued the committee, demanding he be allowed to testify in public about his actions.

Comey also had asked McFadden to put an immediate halt to the joint committee proceedings that led to his subpoena, a request of the kind that no judge in USA history has ever granted.

Goodlatte tweeted a more muted statement on Sunday.

"I have just offered to Director Comey that the Committees will publicly release the transcript of his testimony following the interview for our investigation", Goodlatte tweeted.

"My interest is in making sure people get a full and fair view of the facts", stated Coemy.

Democrats have said the Republican-led inquiry is an attempt to undermine the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by Special Counsel Robert Mueller - himself a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Former Trump lawyer Cohen asks for no prison time
Attorneys for Cohen highlighted their client's broad cooperation with Mueller and other federal investigators. He is also cooperating with federal investigators in the Southern District of NY in another ongoing case.

Comey agreed to sit down for a closed-door deposition Friday.

The Kremlin has denied meddling in the USA elections, and Trump denies colluding with Moscow, repeatedly calling the Mueller probe a political "witch hunt" with no basis in fact.

"Whatever the aim of House Republicans, they are likely feeling the need to act quickly before Democrats, who won control of the chamber in elections earlier this month, take over in January". And it says he was "personally involved" with the Russian Federation probe and "signed off" on the surveillance warrant for Trump advisor Carter Page, who came under scrutiny for his Russian Federation ties during the campaign.

Kelley cited what he said were numerous leaks that distorted what witnesses said in closed session before the committees as the reason for the challenge.
