Judge: White House Must Reinstate CNN's Jim Acosta

The White House has been ordered to give CNN reporter Jim Acosta his press pass back by a judge after it had been stripped following a heated exchange with Donald Trump.

Justice Department correspondent Jessica Schneider reports the judge, based on the Fifth Amendment, said the White House did not provide Acosta "due process" in revoking the pass.

Others named on the suit included White House chief of staff John Kelly and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Acosta's press pass to access the White House was suspended last week "until further notice" after he engaged in the contentious back-and-forth with President Trump during a press conference as the entire press pool looked on.

During the news conference, a White House intern tried to take the microphone from Mr Acosta as he attempted to ask the president a follow-up question. The judge told attorneys for the Trump administration that the White House has to establish standardized rules to justify taking away a pass to cover the White House and wants to hear from both sides again Tuesday.

More than a a dozen outlets joined CNN in its argument, including Fox News Channel and the White House Correspondents' Association, as Trump's team signaled at Wednesday's hearing POTUS believes he has the options of pulling other journalists' credentials.

The White House had spelled out its reasons in a tweet from Mrs Sanders and in a statement after CNN filed its lawsuit.

This result means that Acosta will have his access to the White House restored for at least a short period of time. The White House had argued that CNN could simply send other reporters in Acosta's place, yet Kelly argued that it "does not make the harm to Mr. Acosta any less real".

"The White House has made very clear that they don't like the content of the reporting by CNN and Jim Acosta", Boutrous said.
