Erdogan: Saudi officials, others heard tapes of writer death

A phone call recording collected by the Turkish intelligence links the brutal murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi to the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MbS, The New York Times reports.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the Jamal Khashoggi murder tapes "really shocked" Saudi officials.

"The crown prince says, 'I will clarify the incident; I will also do what is necessary.' We are waiting patiently", Erdogan said, according to The Hurriyet Daily and other Turkish media.

Saudi Arabia's chief prosecutor who visited Istanbul to discuss the killing with his Turkish counterpart seemed to be delaying his job even though there was sufficient evidence about the killing of Khashoggi, Erdogan said.

It's also reported that the security officer, who often travelled with Prince Mohammed, told the man at the other end that "the deed was done", in obvious reference to the murder of Khashoggi.

Recordings of the October 2 operation, carried out by a 15-man hit squad inside Istanbul's Saudi Consulate, have been shared with Western intelligence officials.

"Canada has been fully briefed up on what Turkey had to share", Trudeau said during a news conference at the Canadian Embassy in Paris. The crown prince has fostered a close relationship with the president's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, and the Trump administration has turned Saudi Arabia into Washington's most crucial Arab partner. However, on Monday, French officials stated they had no such recording in their possession.

Going further, Cavusoglu suggested that Le Drian may be trying to cover-up the killing so as not to endanger agreements with Saudi Arabia.

A representative of French intelligence listened to the audio recording and examined detailed information including a transcript on October 24, he added.

"Only someone on Heroin would do that.'" Information about how and when the Saudi intelligence officers abhörte the recording, made by the Turkish President, the newspaper report says. Saudi Arabia has also recently acknowledged Turkish evidence that showed the slaying was premeditated.

Mr Khashoggi's body has never been found, but Sabah reported on Saturday that his killers poured his remains down the drain after dissolving them in acid.
