After cease-fire, Israel captures Gaza assailant on border

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who described the cease-fire as "a capitulation to terror", announced his resignation on Wednesday in protest.

"We will keep knocking on the door of the security council to shoulder its responsibility", Mansour said, adding that he hoped Egyptian efforts for a cease fire would be successful.

The minister had earlier on Wednesday hinted at his impending resignation from the coalition government of Netanyahu.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the military have yet to comment on the announcement.

Following increasing escalation in the region, Palestinian resistance groups Tuesday announced a truce with Israel under Egypt's mediation.

"But together with the heads of the security forces, I see the overall picture of Israel's security, which I can not share with the public", he said at a ceremony to commemorate David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister.

But late on Tuesday, the joint command of the Palestinian armed factions in Gaza said in a statement they would abide by a ceasefire "as long as the Zionist enemy does the same".

Israel hit back with major air strikes, with targets including Hamas's Al-Aqsa TV station and internal security headquarters in Gaza City.

Hamas responded with a barrage of rockets targeted at Israel while Israel continued to carry out air strikes, completely destroying several buildings.

Around 460 rockets and mortar rounds were fired at Israel, the most ever in such a brief time period, the army said.

A Palestinian labourer from the occupied West Bank was martyred when a rocket hit a building in the Israeli city of Ashkelon.

The Israeli leader has faced criticism from hard-right sections of his government and wider society following a truce agreed after the worst escalation in the coastal enclave since the 2014 war between the military and Hamas, the rulers of Gaza.

According to Haaretz, Liebrman was angered by a recent statement from Netanyahu's office, which falsely indicated that he backed the prime minister's push for a ceasefire in Gaza.

After Israeli attacks on Gaza on Monday, seven Palestinians were killed and 25 others wounded.

Israel Ziv, a retired general who once commanded the Israeli military's Gaza division, said Netanyahu was running out of options for dealing with Hamas.

Hamas immediately hailed Mr Lieberman's resignation as victory for its fighters.

Demonstrators each week have approach the border fence, throwing firebombs, grenades and burning tires at Israeli troops. Before the raid, Egyptian and United Nations mediators had made progress in reducing tensions. Israeli snipers have killed about 170 people, majority unarmed.

Hamas, which over the last decade has fought three wars against Israel that deepened Gaza's economic hardships, saw victory in Lieberman's departure. Israel says it is defending its border against attackers, but it has come under heavy worldwide criticism for shooting unarmed people.
