After cease-fire, Israel captures Gaza assailant on border

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who described the cease-fire as "a capitulation to terror", announced his resignation on Wednesday in protest.

"We will keep knocking on the door of the security council to shoulder its responsibility", Mansour said, adding that he hoped Egyptian efforts for a cease fire would be successful.

The minister had earlier on Wednesday hinted at his impending resignation from the coalition government of Netanyahu.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the military have yet to comment on the announcement.

The Israeli leader has faced criticism from hard-right sections of his government and wider society following a truce agreed after the worst escalation in the coastal enclave since the 2014 war between the military and Hamas, the rulers of Gaza.

Hamas immediately hailed Mr Lieberman's resignation as victory for its fighters.

Demonstrators each week have approach the border fence, throwing firebombs, grenades and burning tires at Israeli troops. Before the raid, Egyptian and United Nations mediators had made progress in reducing tensions. Israeli snipers have killed about 170 people, majority unarmed.

Hamas, which over the last decade has fought three wars against Israel that deepened Gaza's economic hardships, saw victory in Lieberman's departure. Israel says it is defending its border against attackers, but it has come under heavy worldwide criticism for shooting unarmed people.
