Delhi’s air quality level remains ‘severe’ despite improvement

Several areas in Delhi including Anand Vihar, ITO and Jahangirpuri have recorded the highest level of pollutants in the air and the Delhi government is planning to mull the odd-even rule back in the national capital.

Delhi pollution is also expected to remain severe to very severe for the next two days. Worryingly, the entire state has only 3 continuously updated air monitoring centres. The Supreme Court's restrictions on bursting firecrackers did not seem to have much of an effect on Mumbaikars.

The transport ministry said that vehicles carrying food and other essentials were exempted, while appealing to private owners of diesel sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to leave their cars at home. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) reported a 24-hr average PM2.5 level at 450 microgram/m3 at 5 PM on Thursday for Delhi. New Delhi topped the chart with air quality index (AQI) recorded at 420. Yet, reports suggest that Indians really do care more about annoying their neighbours, frightening animals, and literally blowing up money in the guise of having a good time, over life's more simple pleasures - like breathing. This air will seriously affect those with ailments, according to a SAFAR advisory.

Experts believe that not only the burning of crackers has been responsible for the deteriorating air quality but replacement of moderate winds with light and calm winds, low temperatures, increased humidity levels are also contributing in increasing the toxicity in the air by a considerable figure. It was around four times higher than Wednesday, "IITM said".

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said that the ultra-fine particles PM 2.5 and PM 10 was 164 and 294 micrograms per cubic metre respectively.

The Supreme Court had allowed bursting of firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm only on Diwali and other festivals.

The court had asked the police to ensure that banned firecrackers were not sold and said in case of any violation, the station house officer (SHO) of the police station concerned would be held personally liable and it would amount to committing contempt of court.

But despite the order, certain places recorded violations where firecrackers were burnt before and after the set time frame.

Did ex-teammate do LeBron a favor by waiving Tyson Chandler?
With Chandler now locked in as the backup center, perhaps the Lakers take another step forward in a tough Western Conference. It was just the second miss in nine 3-point attempts for Rose, who had a 50-point game October 31 against the Utah Jazz.
