US Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns

"It is impossible to read Attorney General Sessions' firing as anything other than another blatant attempt by @realDonaldTrump to undermine and end Special Counsel Mueller's investigation", Ms Pelosi - a front-runner to become speaker of the House of Representatives following this week's mid-terms - tweeted.

Activists are demanding that Whitaker recuse himself from managing the investigation as well, saying he has his conflicts of interest. - Donald Trump just crossed a red line, violating the independence of the investigation pursuing criminal charges in the Trump-Russia scandal and cover-up.

The counselor to the president went on to give credit to Sessions for his work at the Department of Justice, including cracking down on opioid abuse as well as the MS-13 gang.

But a flurry of activity during his quiet period, including weeks of grand jury testimony about Trump confidant Roger Stone and negotiations over an interview with the president, hinted at public developments ahead as investigators move closer to addressing key questions underpinning the special counsel inquiry: Did Trump illegally obstruct the investigation?

CBS News has learned former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is being considered to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

And it appears that has happened with Whitaker's appointment-a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed yesterday that "the Acting Attorney General is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice".

Le’Veon Bell Opens Up About Contract Holdout With Bizarre Tweets
The Athletic reported a month ago that Bell would qualify as a third franchise tag even if he didn't show by the deadline. Either option would allow Bell to seek a deal from another team which is what he has been seeking all along.

That drew criticism from Democrats in Congress because Whitaker, who would now take over responsibility for overseeing Mueller and his investigation, has been critical of the Mueller probe, saying it should be scaled back.

The president can not directly fire the special counsel.

The deputy attorney general appointed Mr Mueller to lead the inquiry after Mr Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in 2017.

And, if nothing else, having an attorney general who isn't recused from Mueller's work might give the White House a clearer look inside it.

Whitaker's views as an outside commentator before joining the government have been music to the ears of Trump and Republicans.

Justice Department rules on special counsels set boundaries on how Mueller could be removed.

Harvick said that he thought if he could prevent him from concluding the corner, he could drive back by him. "It all worked out". Below the cutline after Texas are Kurt Busch (-25 point from fourth), Chase Elliott (-39), Aric Almirola (-57) and Bowyer (-73).

Trump's relentless attacks on Sessions came even though the Alabama Republican was the first USA senator to endorse Trump and despite the fact his crime-fighting agenda and priorities, particularly his hawkish immigration enforcement policies, largely mirrored the president's. "He has no reason to recuse himself", Malcolm told VOA.

Sessions endured most of the name-calling in silence, though he did issue two public statements defending the department, including one in which he said he would serve "with integrity and honor" for as long as he was in the job.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Executive Director Anthony Romero said in a statement on Wednesday that the US Senate must ensure that whomever Trump nominates to replace Sessions will not interfere in Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. The Justice Department, responding to a Washington Post report, soon acknowledged that Sessions had actually had two encounters during the campaign with the then-Russian ambassador.

He also worked on an earlier campaign in Iowa for one of Trump's presidential campaign leaders, Sam Clovis, who has figured in the Russian Federation investigation.

His agenda unsettled liberals who said that Sessions' focus on tough prosecutions marked a return to failed drug war tactics that unduly hurt minorities and the poor, and that his rollbacks of protections for gay and transgender people amount to discrimination.
