Trump Administration Moves to Restrict Asylum at US-Mexico Border

Trump Administration Moves to Restrict Asylum at US-Mexico Border

The administration issued a new policy Thursday that would give President Trump power to block asylum claims from the migrant caravan and other illegal immigrants who jump the U.S. -Mexico border.

Once the plan goes into full effect, which is expected to happen in coming days, migrants entering at the U.S. southern border would only be eligible for asylum if they come to official ports of entry.

The American Civil Liberties Union said that right of asylum must be granted to anyone entering the country, regardless of where they were.

This summer, multiple news outlets reported that hundreds of migrants who had legally presented themselves to USA agents at official ports of entry, like San Ysidro, California and El Paso, Texas, were told that their asylum requests could not be processed.

The move was spurred in part by caravans of Central American migrants walking toward the border.

In 2018, border patrols have registered more than 400,000 illegal border crossers, homeland security said.

The new restrictions on asylum claims won't take effect until Trump issues a proclamation limiting or suspending entry into the US from Mexico, according to the rule.

According to the new rule: 'In recent years, the United States has seen a large increase in the number and proportion of inadmissible aliens subject to expedited removal who assert an intent to apply for asylum or a fear of persecution during that process and are subsequently placed into removal proceedings in immigration court'.

Later, at a campaign rally in Missouri, Trump offered additional remarks on the topic, saying, "Under this plan, the illegal aliens will no longer get a free pass into the country by lodging meritless claims in seeking asylum".

US Army troops enter a compound where the military is erecting an encampment near the US-Mexico border crossing at Donna, Texas.

Two senior administration officials that spoke to NBC News said that "of the [immigration] measures most likely to be approved by the president, all were likely to lead to a lawsuit". They said that the asylum - well, this is something that we know.

This comes as the president has accused migrants of using loopholes in the asylum system to gain entry into the United States.

Trump made immigration a key issue in Tuesday's election, stoking fear among his supporters about a migrant caravan that's still hundreds of miles away in Mexico.
