Melbourne attack: Man arrested after fire and stabbings

One person has been killed and at least two others injured after a dramatic incident on Bourke Street.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a man advancing toward police and attempting to stab them, and then falling backwards after what sounded like a gunshot.

The footage, uploaded to Twitter, also shows pedestrians alternately hovering nearby and trying to make a quick exit from the scene. "They are in a suspected critical condition", they said.

The spokesperson confirmed that one person had died in the stabbing attacks and that the attacker was in hospital.

The auto burst into flames near the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets about 4.20pm on Friday and while the vehicle was quickly extinguished, reports soon followed of a knife attack.

Streets were closed and trams halted while police attend the scene.

Victoria Police said officers responded to reports of a vehicle fire before they were confronted by the man. Clayton said there is no known link to terrorism, but stressed the investigation is still in its early stages.

About 6pm, Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton holds a press conference just metres from where the incident unfolded.

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

The message over the loudspeakers says: "This is Victoria Police, please evacuate the area".

Witnesses told The Age they were shopping in the area when they saw a man throw what they believed to be a bomb into a vehicle before it exploded.

The attacker reportedly torched his auto before the vehicle burst into flames.

'Police response was swift and overwhelming. They said they heard screams and cries from the crowd before they were rushed from the area.

The incident comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January a year ago.

"And then I heard one loud bang".

"I really wanted to help but I was in shock, I didn't know what to do".

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade said the fire was contained within 10 minutes.
