The dead officer was identified as Sergeant Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department, Dean told reporters. The highway patrolman pulled Helus out, then waited as a SWAT team and scores more officers arrived.

Helus, who lived in neighboring Moorpark with his wife and son, died at about 2 a.m.at a hospital.

"He was totally committed", Dean said.

"He gave his all ... he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said.

Chandler Gunn, 23, told the San Diego Tribune that when he heard about the shooting he rushed to the bar and called a friend who works at Borderline, who like numerous bar's regular patrons was also at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas when a gunman killed 58 people and wounded hundreds.

Officials say the suspect, who has not been identified, was found dead inside. No other information on them was immediately known.

Other witnesses described seeing and hearing people smashing windows with barstools to create escape routes from the bar.

Mass Shooting Reported At Borderline Bar & Grill In Thousand Oaks, California
Authorities say multiple people were injured at a shooting at a bar in Southern California on Wednesday night. The gunman was still believed to be inside the bar an hour later, according to a police official.

Hundreds of people were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks when Long, armed with an uzi, unleashed a terrifying barrage of smoke bombs before opening fire and killing 12 people, leaving "blood everywhere". It was not clear whether he killed himself or was killed by officers, Dean said.

A law enforcement officer said the suspect used a.45-caliber handgun, created to hold a magazine of 10 rounds. It's unclear whether he took his own life or if the attack was terror-related.

Thousand Oaks, one of the largest cities in Ventura County, is about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

Justin Meek, 23, was one of those killed at the country music night on Wednesday.

Law enforcement was ushering Helus' casket through town in a motorcade, and crowds began to line the streets as Harris Faulkner interviewed Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Garo Kuredjian on the incident. He said he had an army of friends and families on alert, making calls, and watching the news looking out for his son.
