75,000 homes evacuated as Southern California fire rages


The erupted Thursday near the northwest corner of the city of Los Angeles as the region's notorious Santa Ana winds gusted, triggering overnight evacuations of an estimated 75,000 homes in western Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County.

The 20,000 acre (8,100 hectare) Camp Fire, which started on Thursday near Camp Creek, is being driven west by 35 miles per hour (56 kmh) winds, fire officials said.

Unfortunately, Scott Derrickson, best known for directing Doctor Strange, announced on Twitter early this morning that his home has been lost in the fire.

Cal State Channel Islands has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the campus due to the fire, and all classes and activities have been canceled this evening, according to a news release from campus officials.

San Luis Obispo County residents traveling south on Friday into Ventura County and Los Angeles should use caution and be prepared for delays and detours caused by two wildfires that have closed parts of Highway 101 and prompted evacuations.

Multiple injuries have been reported by both civilians and firefighters, Cal Fire spokesman John Gaddie said.

The fire had crossed USA 101 a few miles east of Thousand Oaks - the site of Wednesday night's bar shooting massacre - and was headed south to the Pacific coast, in the direction of Malibu Creek State Park, the city of Malibu and Pepperdine University, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

At least 30 homes have been destroyed.

"The town is devastated, everything is destroyed".

It reached the edge of Chico, a city of 90,000 people Thursday night.

Evacuation orders in the Hidden Hills area of Los Angeles County were also downgraded to voluntary.

The Los Angeles county fire department tweets that the fire is headed to the ocean, punctuating the message with the declaration: "Imminent threat!"

Thirty-thousand people have been evacuated so far and the number of evacuees is expected to rise as embers push ahead of the fire.

More than 15,000 structures in Butte County remain threatened by the blaze, which continues to grow under "extreme fire and weather conditions", according to the latest incident report.

With the area still reeling from the shooting at the Thousand Oaks bar, the Hill fire has spread to 10,000 acres, quickly shutting down the 101 Freeway.

Winds were blowing between 25-30 miles per hour and pushed the fire across the freeway onto Conejo Mountain toward the Pacific Coast Highway.

The Hill Fire ignited around 2 p.m. local time in the area of Hill Canyon in Santa Rosa, according to Ventura County Fire Department officials. No roadways were closed as of Friday.
