Trump urges Democrats to join hands, but remains defiant

President Trump held a news conference the day after Democrats regained control of the House in the midterm elections.

In a move seemingly created to steal some of the Democrats thunder the day after retaking the House, Trump gathered reporters for a press conference in the East Room of the White House to make the case that Republican voters rallied for politicians who mimicked the president and promoted his priorities and candidates who were cool on Trump lost. "I mean, I think she could have won that race, but she didn't want to have any embrace".

The Republicans' control of the Senate is arguably more significant, says the BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Washington, because Mr Trump focused his campaigning on Senate races, and candidates he backed clearly benefited.

President Trump immediately set his sights on re-election in 2020 yesterday after claiming to have "defied history" by making gains in U.S. midterm elections even as his party lost control of one chamber of Congress.

Trump cited health care and infrastructure as areas where the two parties could work together. With an expanded Republican Senate majority, President Trump can confirm judges, cabinet members, and senior administration officials more easily, pushing forward with his agenda. But political analysts said the results fell short of the sweeping repudiation of President Trump wished for by Democrats, who secretly hoped for a tsunami that never materialized. LePage governed largely by mobilizing the House minority Republican caucus to sustain a record number of 642 vetoes - more than all other ME governors combined going back to 1917 and 80 times as many as his predecessor, Baldacci.

"I thought it was very close to a complete victory", Trump said.

"Or we can work together", he said, adding that "it really could be a lovely bipartisan type of situation".

She was born on July 24, 1976, to working-class Palestinian immigrants in Detroit and is the eldest of 14 children. Another Muslim woman, Ilhan Omar , who is running in Minnesota's 5th District, is also expected to win.

The firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions could also prompt a more combative stance from House Democrats in their attempt to protect the Russian Federation investigation by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller.

"Mia Love gave me no love", the president said.

New Jersey senator Bob Menendez, addressing the crowd in Hoboken after his re-election victory, said he was told that the state's junior senator, Democrat Cory Booker, "may be busy really soon". "Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!"

The Republican president also clashed repeatedly with reporters at the White House, ordering them to be quiet. Both said they will seek the job of minority leader. "When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people". Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, for example was defeated although he had embraced Trump, with both highlighting their desire to get more of the president's judicial nominees confirmed, a top priority for many social conservatives.

"You have some that said, 'Let's stay away, let's stay away.' They did very poorly", Trump said.

Even in the Senate where Democrats lost ground, they won the popular vote in those races by 15 points (they got 57 percent of the popular vote; the Republicans - just 42 percent).

He singled out GOP Representatives Mike Coffman of Colorado, Mia Love of Utah, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Carlos Curbelo of Florida, Peter Roskam of Illinois, Erik Paulsen of Minnesota, John Faso of NY and Bob Hugin, who challenged Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey.

Cowboys players and coaches react after Dez Bryant signs with the Saints
Although he'll take a backseat to Thomas, there's a major opportunity due to the lack of depth at receiver on the Saints now . Bryant's presence in New Orleans figures to boost a passing offense that already ranks as one of the top ten best in the NFL.

He was clear that a Democrat-led investigation into his tax returns would ruin any reconciliation efforts.

The president's party will maintain control of the executive branch of the government, in addition to the Senate.

Trump briefly sought to strike a statesmanlike tone in his first public remarks after the loss, praising House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi for her hard work and envisioning "a attractive, bipartisan type of situation" on infrastructure investments and health care.

The Democratic sweep should end an era of highly charged partisan discord that was dominated by outgoing Republican Gov. Paul LePage and his prolific use of the veto.

For Pelosi, Trump's endorsement Wednesday could be just what she needs to push past the naysayers and help neutralize the critics.

"In President Obama's first midterm he lost six seats, including in the deep blue state of Massachusetts", Trump said.

"We are going to have to ruthlessly prioritise because there is so much that has gone wrong", Democrat Adam Schiff, who is expected to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said ahead of the election.

Democrats faced a far more hard challenge in the Senate, where they were nearly exclusively on defence in rural states where Trump remains popular.
