Godolphin Wins First Melbourne Cup With Cross Counter

For jockey Kerrin McEvoy, it is his third Melbourne Cup, and he becomes the first jockey to complete the Everest-Cup double.

In a ideal completion to a stellar year highlighted by Masar's Derby victory, Thunder Snow's Dubai World Cup and 27 other G1s, Cross Counter epitomised the Godolphin philosophy of pushing global boundaries and striving for perfection.

UPDATES: THE horse that exited midway through the Melbourne Cup - the Aidan O'Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher - has been euthanased.

Marmelo and A Prince of Arran ran second and third respectively, as race favourites Yucatan and Magic Circle failed to deliver on pre-race expectations.

Yet, while Appleby was quick to credit Sheikh Mohammed, it was the aforementioned McEvoy - basking in the glory of a third Melbourne Cup win - who recalled their early days on the A1, driving to meetings at Doncaster and York.

A Prince Of Arran only won his way into Tuesday's race with victory in the Lexus Stakes on Saturday. "He just needed the gaps there, that's all he needed".

Pep Guardiola: Manchester City's success not just down to money
A huge £59.5m of an agreement with club sponsor Etihad Airways worth £67.5m was apparently financed by Mansour. Der Spiegel cited Man City documents in which officials wrote: "Without significant additional revenues".

"Today's tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks these horses face every time they run, and highlights that behind the gloss and glamour of Cup celebrations there is a dark reality", said Speechley.

"I was delighted what I saw and more so after I'd spoken to Kerrin".

"For me, it is a very special to be here, but like I say, for a team it is just fantastic for everybody".

Melbourne Cup contender Cliffsofmoher has been euthanised on track after suffering a fractured shoulder.

"His Highness could see a trend developing where young improving stayers from Europe would be ideally suited by the Melbourne Cup, and Cross Counter fitted that description perfectly", Appleby said a day after the triumph.

Last year Regal Monarch, which fell in race four on Melbourne Cup day, was euthanased after being injured during the race.

A 'Breaking Bad' movie is in the works
The movie has a tentative title of " Greenbrier ", and will follow " the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom ". The New Mexico Film Office has confirmed that a project with that title is due to start shooting in mid-November.

Temporary boardwalks had to be laid down to save punters' shoes from the rising floodwaters at Flemington's world-famous Birdcage, but the skies had cleared by the time the main event came around at 3 p.m. local time (12 a.m ET). I thought mate, is this happening again?

Jockey Jordan Childs escaped serious injury after a fall when riding Galaxy Raider in the MSS Security Sprint more than an hour after the Melbourne Cup.

"Most of those European horses that ran (in the Cup) were not proven at two miles and yet they were still too strong for everyone else which tells you it's not just the staying division that's so weak - it's the mile-and-a-half and basically the mile-and-a-quarter division".

Nearby Flemington Station had been shut down and racegoers were advised to walk from the Showground station, 20 minutes away, the ABC's Nathan Stitt reported on Twitter.

The only sure bet on the Melbourne Cup is that Lloyd Williams, or anyone else for that matter, won't be taking on "crazy owner" Dr Marwan Koukash's promise to accept the trophy in his G-string.

Regal Monarch, trained by Chris Waller, was euthanised after falling in race four past year, while British stayer Red Cadeaux was put down two weeks after falling and breaking a leg in the 2015 Melbourne Cup.
