Dems flip 2 GOP seats in early returns for House battle

In Florida, Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has ousted Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo in Florida's 26th Congressional District, providing a critical boost to Democrats.

Democrats will win control of the House of Representatives in Tuesday's 2018 midterm elections, CNN projects. Republicans, meanwhile, kept control of the Senate.

It also will test Trump's ability to compromise, something he has shown little interest in over the last two years with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress.

Democratic leader of the House Nancy Pelosi hailed the expected Democrat wins, saying Americans have "had enough of division".

Takeya Sneeze, a 35-year-old African-American woman, said poll workers were "pumping provisional ballots like crack dealers in the '80s".

Trump was watching the results roll in from the White House, where he spent the day holed up with friends and family.

Democrats could derail Mr Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years should they win control of the House or the Senate. The GOP is poised to enlarge its majority by at least two seats.

United States president Donald Trump's Republicans seized victory in Indiana's high-profile Senate contest, defeating Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly and making the Democrats' narrow path to a Senate majority ever slimmer. Now they must defend Trump's hard-line rhetoric and policy on issues like immigration and trade, despite tensions within the party over those same issues.

"We always knew these races are going to be close", said Rep. Katherine Clark of MA, co-chair of House Democrats' recruitment efforts.

The Republican incumbent had been branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats in a race that pointed to Trump's unpopularity among college-educated women in the suburbs.

Democrats claimed some high-profile victories, with former professional hockey player Colin Allred defeating Pete Sessions, the chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee and leading opponent of legalized marijuana, in suburban Dallas.

The GOP also got major wins in toss-up governors races in states like Florida and OH, though Democrats did manage to pick up wins in a number of states like IL and MI.

In other notable contests, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won her race for a House seat in NY - becoming, at 29, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. She was the subject of millions of dollars in Republican attack ads this cycle, forcing more than a dozen candidates to publicly vow not to support her for speaker.

"We're seeing the ramifications of Democrats on these committees who have this kind of power", Melber said. Twenty-five percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election. But Pelosi has promised to focus first on government and campaign finance reform measures.

The Republican caucuses in both chambers have become even more conservative with the loss of moderates within Trump's party, even as Democrats appear to be spoiling for a fight with Trump.
