Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis vote in Florida

After a primary ad in which he built a wall and read "The Art of the Deal" with his kids, DeSantis was helped by the president's involvement in the race, even as his Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum took hard lines against Trump's actions at the national level.

On Tuesday both men cast their ballots.

The trips and the ticket are part of an ethics investigation into Gillum, and Corey is at the heart of a federal probe into Tallahassee city government.

"Obviously, we do not yet have any vote totals here, the night before the election", he added.

DeSantis walked into his polling place Ponte Vedra with his family by his side. He too was expecting a victory as he thanked supporters.

Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum speaks during a CNN debate against Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis, on October 21, 2018.

"If we show up and we vote, the next time I see you I will greet you as the Governor of the great State of Florida. Let's bring it home everybody", he told the thousands in the crowd.

Speaking shortly after he conceded, Mr Gillum said: "We recognise that we didn't win it tonight, we didn't win this transaction. And I really appreciate his position on health care". In addition to DeSantis' resume as an Ivy-League-educated Iraq veteran, as the weeks went on, his campaign also became heavily focused on the economy and public safety - through the lens of Gillum.

Democratic Party officials, who have accused Kemp of trying to suppress the minority vote, quickly denied the charge. "I don't think we want to stop our economic momentum", DeSantis said.

Big election day tomorrow!

Democratic candidates also triumphed in Illinois, Maine, New Mexico and Nevada, where Republicans had held the governorships.
