India man-eating tigress killed after huge hunt

Animal rights body PETA India Saturday said the killing of a tiger as part of an operation in Maharashtra should be investigated and treated as a wildlife crime and termed it a "dark day" for the nation.

Trained sniffer dogs, trap cameras, drones and a hang-glider, expert trackers, sharp-shooters and around 200 ground personnel were roped in for the task, officials said.

The shot, Nawab says, was inevitable as the tigress aggressively charged at the team soon after being hit with a tranquillizing dart.

As such, the Times report says: "Villagers in the area erupted in joy when they heard about her death, shooting off firecrackers, passing out candies and pumping their fists in the air".

Officials said the post-mortem of the tigress would be conducted at Nagpur's Gorewada rescue centre.

They also tried tracking her while riding elephants.

"The Forest Department is not an enemy of the tigress". Avni was shot dead by Asgar Ali, the son of controversial sharpshooter Nawaf Shafat Ali. She also vowed to take up the case "legally, criminally as well as politically".
