Officials identify 26th case of viral outbreak

The department said in a statement on Friday that the latest death involved a child who was "medically fragile with respiratory illness".

In some versions of a story October 25 about a viral outbreak, The Associated Press misspelled the name of the New Jersey health commissioner.

"We are working every day to ensure all infection control protocols are continuously followed and closely monitoring the situation at the facility", he said.

The illness, identified as adenovirus 7, poses the most significant risk to patients with weakened immune systems or existing respiratory and cardiac disease. The child had become ill before October 22, according to officials. It said it did not have laboratory confirmation of adenovirus in the child.

New Jersey health officials are sending infection-control teams to four long-term pediatric centers and a hospital to assist with training amid viral and bacterial outbreaks that killed a combined 10 people.

The department says there have been eight pediatric deaths associated with the outbreak and at least one young adult.

The agency said the most recent individual became sick on or before October 22, which remains the last day when a patient showed new symptoms.

The ninth child became ill before October 22 and died on October 28, the New Jersey Department of Health said.

Symptoms include a sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, fever, and neurologic disease.

The facility has since stopped admitting new residents as long as the outbreak is ongoing.

"Facility outbreaks are not always preventable, but in response to what we have seen in Wanaque, we are taking aggressive steps to minimize the chance they occur among the most vulnerable patients in New Jersey", Elnahal said in a statement.

This month, NJ.com reported that in the center's most recent health inspection report, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services gave the facility a "below average" score, and the 2017 report also said the facility "failed to ensure infection control practices were followed".
