Apple updates MacBook Air with Retina display, Touch ID

This story is developing, check back to see more details about Apple's new MacBook Air. It's late to the game, sure, but now that it is here and with the holiday season upon us, Apple is likely going to sell a lot of these in the coming months.

Apple finally debuted the much-awaited MacBook Air with Retina display earlier today, featuring an 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor, superior stereo sound, Touch ID, Force Touch trackpad, and the third generation backlit butterfly keyboard, among other upgrades.

The new MacBook Air comes with a sharper Retina display than the more traditional and lower resolution display on the current MacBook Air. But unlike the MacBook Pro, the new Air has a traditional function key row with a TouchID fingerprint reader in the top-right corner, rather than a Touch Bar. It is also marginally lighter than the previous model.

The debacle followed a battering in a state election in Bavaria two weeks ago for the CSU and the Social Democrats. But the CDU and ecologist Greens may lack sufficient support to renew their ruling alliance in the state.

It ships with eighth-generation dual-core Core i5 processor along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costing $1,199 in the USA, undercutting both the smaller 12in MacBook and the cheapest MacBook Pro in cost. Apple says this reduces the laptop's carbon footprint by a half. The new MacBook Air brings several new features on the iconic low-powered notebook.

The 13.3-inch screen crams 4 million pixels onto the screen and Apple says the borders around the edge of the screen are "50% narrower" than before.

The new MacBook Air is priced at $1,199 for its standard edition, available in gold, silver, and space gray.

The speakers are now 25 percent louder with better bass and includes a three-microphone array for better Siri input and communication. (The new Air runs from 0.16 inches to 0.61 inches, whereas the Pro is consistent 0.59 inches, fact fans.) And there's only 0.27 pounds difference in weight between the two as well.

The original MacBook Air was lauded as the most affordable Mac you could possibly buy, with models starting at $999 (about £770, AU$1,410) in later versions following its 2008 launch. That base level configuration starts at $1,199.
