Strong quake hits Greek island, no major damage reported

An quake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck off Greece's west coast early Friday near the island of Zakynthos.

Greece's Geodynamic Institute has reported that the quake was of a magnitude of 6.4, and its epicenter was 33 kilometers.

Greece's fire service said no damage has been reported so far, but power has been cut off in the island capital of Zakynthos. "We advise people to remain calm", Zante mayor Pavlos Kolokotsas told Real FM radio.

"The energy unleashed, based on the angle of the faultline, fanned out towards Italy", he added.

Greece's main quake monitoring center, Athens' University's Geodynamic Institute, measured the magnitude at 6.4, and said it had a depth of 5 kilometers.

He added that the USA has 'more money than anybody else by far, we'll build it up until they come to their senses'. That does not sit well with European allies, who have all cautioned that leaving the treaty is a mistake.

Italy's Il Messaggero online news site said the quake was felt hundreds of miles away in southern Italy. Firefighters in Sicily, Calabria and Puglia received thousands of telephone calls for information about the quake.

They also left large cracks in the port of Zakynthos, though authorities there said operations would continue as usual.

Greek authorities initially issued a tsunami warning then withdrew the alert.

According to Euro-Mediterranean data the size was 6.6 on the Richter and the focus was 53 kilometers southeastern to Zakynthos.

"We are expecting a big afterquake of up to 5.7 magnitude but it will be much smaller than the main quake".
