Football fans injured as escalator collapses at underground station in Rome

An escalator in a Rome metro station broke on Tuesday, injuring 20 people, a lot of them CSKA Moscow football fans, according to Italian police.

State television RAI broadcast a video of the incident that showed a packed escalator suddenly speed up, hurtling people down the stairs.

The dramatic footage shows people on the parallel escalator trying to pull others to safety.

Emergency services described the escalator's steps as "split and crumpled" and surrounded by broken glass and beer bottles, reports Sky Italia.

Roma and CSKA fans also clashed outside the Stadio Olimpico arena before the game. "At that moment the escalator collapsed", a police spokesman told Russian news agency RIA.

Witnesses quoted by police said the Russian fans had been singing and jumping before the escalator gave way. One of the fans had a foot partially severed in the crush, Italian newspaper Repubblica reported.
