Dyson to build electric vehicle plant in Singapore

Dyson to build electric vehicle plant in Singapore

The facility is expected to be completed by 2020, with the first cars being sold in 2021.

Once the plant is completed, Rowan added that Dyson's first electric auto will roll off the production line in 2021.

Dyson plans to utilise what it's learned making vacuum cleaners with "switched reluctance" electric motors and apply that to cars.

Founder and chief engineer James Dyson's vision for an electric vehicle includes about US$2.7 billion (NZ$4.1 billion) in spending on technology and production.

UK's May tries to calm Brexit rebels, says deal nearly done
The original plan is for a 21-month period starting March 30, 2019, as soon as the United Kingdom has left. Criticism of her Brexit strategy has intensified following a Brussels summit.

But Dyson, a company based in Britain with roughly 4800 employees there, is already getting heat for its choice of Singapore for the new plant.

Dyson said the decision was based on the availability of engineering talent, regional supply chains and proximity to some key target markets, and had "nothing to do with Brexit".

The company, best known for its cordless vacuum cleaners, hand dryers and fans, said Singapore offered access to high-growth markets, an extensive supply chain and a highly skilled workforce.

"Our existing footprint and team in Singapore, combined with the nation's significant advanced manufacturing expertise, made it a frontrunner".

"The decision of where to make our auto is complex, based on supply chains, access to markets, and the availability of the expertise that will help us achieve our ambitions", Rowan said.

The company, which first announced plans for an electric vehicle in September 2017 after years of rumours, is hoping its battery expertise will translate into the automotive space.

Founder James Dyson said in an email to company employees that the technologies that underpin a number of Dyson products could be adapted for use in an electric vehicle.

Dyson told AFP in an interview earlier this year that electric cars were already available to order. Dyson previously stated that the budget for the EV project was £2bn and that £200m of that amount was going to be spent in the United Kingdom on research and development, as well as test track facilities. "I was also delighted to hear that his company is working with our schools to inspire and mentor future generations of Singaporean engineers".
