NOAA: Winter may be warmer than average

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, releasing its Winter Outlook on Thursday, predicts that MI will see a warmer and drier than normal 2018/19 winter season.

"We find ourselves on the verge of El Nino", said Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, on a call with reporters Thursday.

"That does not mean that below average temperatures can not occur", Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, said in a statement. However, Halper said, it's not expected to be quite as strong as the El Nino that helped lead to the record warm 2015-2016 winter season.

The main headline from the press release is that there is a higher chance of the United States to experience warmer than average temperatures for the winter.

No parts of the country are due to see a colder-than-normal winter. On Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, the National Weather Service forecasted a warmer than normal 2018-2019 winter for the northern and western three-quarters of the U.S.

And while that may not be a dealbreaker in itself, it's drifting farther away, once again, from the Model 3's original promise. This change could put the Model 3 in an affordable price range for a number of customers - at least while incentives last.

The prospect of stormy conditions in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic means it has the greatest chance of having colder-than-normal conditions of anywhere in the country, Halpert said.

"Even during a warmer-than-average winter, periods of cold temperatures and snowfall are still likely to occur", the agency stated in its outlook.

"Snow forecasts are generally not predictable more than a week in advance".
