USA commander survives Afghan gun attack but police chief dies

The Taliban claimed responsibility, and a Taliban spokesman said U.S. Gen. Scott Miller, commander of U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops in Afghanistan, was the target. Two US citizens were wounded.

The shooting broke out at the end of a meeting between Miller and officials who had been discussing how to maintain security during Afghanistan's parliamentary elections, scheduled for Saturday.

Raziq was killed in the attack, while two USA citizens and several top Afghan official, including the governor, were wounded, Pajhwok Afghan News reported. "And that's another big effect of Raziq's assassination: The Americans lost a steadfast ally with whom they had worked so well for so many years and on whom they had come to depend so much", he said.

U.S. CDC confirms 62 cases of rare polio-like neurological condition
In the most severe cases, patients suffer respiratory failure when the muscles involved with breathing become weak, the CDC says. A risky and rare disease that's similar to the polio virus is on the rise in the U.S. , and it has health officials baffled.

Kandahar's deputy provincial governor Agha Lala Dastageri said powerful provincial police chief Abdul Raziq and the province's intelligence chief Abdul Mohmin died immediately in the attack and provincial governor Zalmay Wesa died of his injuries at a hospital. Three Americans were wounded, have been medically evacuated and are stable.

"Initial reports indicate this was an Afghan-on-Afghan incident", Peters said.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is calling it an "Afghan-on-Afghan" incident; the Associated Press says the officials were "killed by their own guards" in the attack.

"General Raziq and the provincial NDS (intelligence agency) chief have been killed, and the governor himself is in a critical condition", a senior government official told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

Afghanistan's Tolo television station reported that the attack had been carried out by a bodyguard for the governor of Kandahar.

Several current and former officials confirmed the death of Abdul Raziq, 39, a close USA ally and fierce anti-Taliban fighter. "We are being told the area is secure". He had been credited with security improvements in recent years. Gen. Harold J. Greene was killed and about a dozen USA soldiers were wounded when an Afghan soldier opened fire inside a building in Kabul. His forces received Western training and funds, and US military officials often consulted him.
