UK Jews disproportionately targets of religious hate crime

In 2016-17 there was a 29 per cent increase in the number of hate crimes, with 80,393 hate crimes recorded by police in England and Wales.

Hate crimes and incidents are defined as those perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic.

The statistics show that there were 71,251 race hate crimes recorded in 2017/18, which accounts for 76 per cent of the total.

The goal of omitting hate crimes from Scotland is all well and good, particularly when police in Scotland say they saw over 110 hate crime incidents each week (according to the One Scotland website) previous year alone.

The Home Office said the increase came following several events "such as the European Union referendum and the terrorist attacks in 2017".

But officials haven't been able to find a single agent that would explain the clusters of cases that occur around the same time. But the data reported Tuesday represents "a substantially larger number than in previous months this year", Messonnier said.


Sexual orientation hate crimes and religious hate crimes became second and third in terms of prevalence, amounting to 12 per cent and 9 per cent of the total amount of hate crimes, respectively.

"Analysis of racially motivated hate crime by religion shows that Muslim adults were more likely to be a victim of racially motivated hate crime than other adults", it notes.

The figures by the Home Office came during the hate crime awareness week - a week held every year to raise awareness of the public about this type of offences with various activities and meetings.

The Home Office has tasked the Law Commission to carry out a review of current hate crime laws as part of a series of new measures announced on Tuesday.

The disability charity United Response is now working with West Yorkshire Police to train its staff and other organisations to help people with physical and learning disabilities, Down's syndrome and autism recognise the signs of hate crimes and know how to report them.

"Sadly, we still hear incidents of intolerance, whether it's a migrant being told they don't belong, a disabled child being verbally abused, a Muslim woman having her veil torn off or anonymous keyboard cowards infecting the internet with hatred".

The plan involves developing a multi-agency communications strategy, including the message that there should be zero-tolerance of hate crime, as well as well as a review of how hate crime is reported.
