Saudis said ready to concede writer was slain in botched interrogation

Trump is suggesting that "rogue killers" may be responsible for whatever happened to missing Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, 59, disappeared earlier this month after he entered the Saudi Consulate to obtain documents related to his upcoming marriage to a Turkish woman.

Turkish officials believe Khashoggi, a sharp critic of the Saudi Arabian government, was killed last week inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

More major players in worldwide finance and industry are pulling out of a high-profile business conference in Saudi Arabia in the wake of reports that a USA -based Saudi writer critical of the government disappeared and is feared dead after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey.

If Riyadh goes public with its new explanation, it would require a reversal of its previous claim that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive.

Cengiz said she waited for Khashoggi to come out of the consulate, but he never left.

Trump quoted the King on Monday as saying that neither he nor his son, Crown Prince Mohammed, had any information about what had happened to Khashoggi.

His comments were followed a day later by Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who tweeted that his country always stands by Saudi Arabia "because it is a stand with honour, glory, stability and hope".

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia considered delaying the Saudi investment conference until after the investigation, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

"Canada remains very troubled by the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and calls for a through, credible and transparent investigation into the serious allegations about Mr. Kashoggi's disappearance".

Saudi Arabia has strongly denied any involvement in the reporter's disappearance and claimed Khashoggi left the consulate, but provided no evidence to back up their claims. A Saudi official said the kingdom has begun an investigation ordered by the king and could hold people accountable if evidence warrants it.

But White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow says the conference will deal with terrorist financing and how to stop it, and that "at the moment", Mnuchin intends to go.

"The denial was very, very strong", Trump told reporters. A Saudi delegation had entered the consulate one hour before the Turkish police arrived and appeared still to be inside as the search was conducted.

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several US businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland.

Saudi flags, photos of the king and crown prince looking stern, and pro-Saudi hashtags were making the rounds on social media Monday with a common theme: Saudi Arabia and its ruling family are a "red line".
