U.S. Must ‘Push Harder for the Truth’ About Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

U.S. Must ‘Push Harder for the Truth’ About Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

On Monday, CNN cited two sources as saying the Saudis are preparing a report that Khashoggi's death resulted from a botched interrogation.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman and his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have denied involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday that Saudi operatives beat and drugged Khashoggi, then killed and dismembered him.

The consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, left Turkey on a commercial flight bound for Saudi Arabia earlier in the day.

An audio recording has emerged of the alleged torture and murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to Sky sources.

They were very clear: "they understand the important of this issue, they are determined to get to the bottom of it", Pompeo told reporters.

The report is meant to absolve the Saudi government of responsibility for the murder by claiming the operation was carried out without any clearance from senior officials. "Saudi Arabia, I get along with all of them", Trump said.

Per the official US government account, Pompeo spent his time "thanking" the Saudi king for his country's "strong partnership" with the United States.

He met King Salman on Tuesday and later with the crown prince who both denied any knowledge of what happened to the Riyadh critic after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. They provided no further details.

Pompeo "also thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation of Khashoggi's disappearance", the statement read.

"We also had the chance to talk about lots of other elements of the relationship between our two countries", he told reporters. "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers". The US president has been pressing King Salman and Opec to boost production for weeks to drive down high crude oil prices, caused in part by the coming re-imposition of oil sanctions on Iran after the US withdrawal from that's country's nuclear deal with world powers.

"Absolutely extraordinary they were able to enlist the President of the United States as their PR agent to float it".

"They are trying to make fun of us and our willingness to cooperate", one of the officials said.

"Here you go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent", Trump said.

The claim, which was first made to the New York Times earlier in the investigation into Khashoggi's fate, comes after Turkish officials searched the consulate for nine hours on Monday night.

Khashoggi, who was critical of the Saudi regime in his columns, was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Turkey on October 2.

Initially, the Saudis maintained that Khashoggi left the Turkish consulate alive. European allies have urged "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible. Another member of the group identified by Turkish official media and appearing in the alleged passport scans is Muhammad Saad al-Zahrani, who has appeared on Saudi state TV alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Saudi consulate referred Reuters to authorities in Riyadh, who did not respond to questions about the 15 Saudis.
