Student made cookies for classmates with ashes

One student who chose to remain anonymous told CNN one of the alleged bakers made it clear that the cookies contained human remains.

A high school student reportedly baked cookies that contained the ashes of his dead grandparents, and then passed them out to classmates.

Police are working to confirm the claim that two Da Vinci High School students used human remains in the mix of a homemade batch of sugar cookies.

"The district seems to be a little bit more concerned about protecting themselves than protecting their students", his father said.

In a statement, Davis Police lieutenant Paul Doroshov said up to nine students consumed the cookies, but none had fallen sick "physically or physiologically". The cookies have not yet been tested. "There could be some emotional issues experienced, but no one got sick from this, physically", he added, explaining that although the incident is morbid, it would not be considered poisoning because cremated human remains are not toxic or risky.

Students say the girl gave out the cookies and then said that her grandmother was baked into them.

Ballots have already been printed in the race and it wasn't immediately clear how elections officials would handle Hof's death. Boruchowitz says there is no sign of foul play. "The Clark County coroner will conduct an autopsy", Muth said in a statement .


"It would take probably some legal debate to figure out if that's even the case here", Doroshov said.

The student's parents are outraged that they had not been notified about the incident sooner. "I was really repulsed".

They claim that after the administration questioned their son, he was asked to submit a statement and was told "not to tell anyone".

DJUSD spokeswoman Maria Clayton said that while district can't comment on confidential student matters, "the physical and social-emotional safety of our students is always our first priority".
