Palestinian Rioters Use Explosive Device to Damage Israel Border Fence

Israel's military began targeting militant sites in Gaza on Wednesday, calling the attacks a response to earlier rockets that were launched from Gaza, one of which struck a residential home in southern Israel.

In retaliation Israel struck 20 targets in Gaza, killing one Palestinian, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

"In response to the rockets fired from #Gaza at #Israel overnight, IDF fighter jets started to attack terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip", the Israel Defense Forces wrote on Twitter, two hours after sharing news of the rocket attack and saying "we will defend Israeli civilians".

The latest escalation came after Israel Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman signaled he had had enough of the relentless violence along the border with Gaza, and the significant increase in infiltration attempts from the coastal enclave.

It also reduced the permitted fishing zone along the Gaza coast to three nautical miles.

The rocket fell into the garden of a house occupied by a family with three children who were being treated for shock, local media reported.

"A launch [of a rocket] from the Gaza Strip aimed at hitting the Israeli territory has been registered", the statement said.

The minister spoke on Tuesday during a visit to a military base near the border.

Following the rocket attack, schools were closed in Beersheba and in the communities immediately surrounding the Gaza Strip and residents of the Gaza periphery were barred from holding gatherings of more than 300 people outdoors and 500 people indoors.

Only Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the two main militant factions in Gaza, have access to the more powerful medium-range rockets required to hit Beer Sheva, which is some 40 kilometers east of Gaza, Conricus said.

It was unclear who fired the projectiles but the Israeli army says it holds Hamas accountable for what is happening in the territory under its control and commonly retaliates against them after such incidents. Last week, some 14,000 Palestinians thronged to the perimeter fence, burning tires and throwing rocks, firebombs and grenades at soldiers stationed atop earth mounds on the other side. Palestinians have launched incendiary balloons and kites into Israel and on occasion breached an Israeli frontier fence.

"If it has any sense, Hamas will cease its fire and violent outbursts - now", he said Sunday.

In response, Israel halted Qatari-donated fuel shipments to Gaza's power plant and warned that if the violence didn't stop there would be series consequences.

Seven were killed and hundreds injured during the most recent protests on Friday, with Lieberman later suspending fuel supplies to the already energy-starved Gaza Strip.

The UN says Israel's 11-year blockade of the enclave, ruled by Hamas, has resulted in a "catastrophic" humanitarian situation.
