From the first question he fielded, O'Rourke took unprompted jabs at his Republican opponent.

In the clip - which was funded by the "Fire Cruz" PAC - a man sitting at a diner says, "Everybody I know in Texas likes Whataburger".

It was a change in strategy for O'Rourke, who has been hesitant to attack Cruz while portraying himself as a figure who could bring Texans together.

O'Rourke continued his more combative approach through the debate.

Trump, who is coming to Houston on Monday for a rally with Cruz, fueled a number of contentious exchanges during the debate at the studios of KENS 5, the CBS affiliate in San Antonio. You were all talk and no action. Most of the party's candidates for statewide office in Texas over the last two election cycles lost by margins of more than 20 percentage points.

Cruz cited his work helping to pass the Republican tax reform bill previous year as an area where he has delivered for the state of Texas. He said he can work with the president and criticized O'Rourke for saying he's in favor of impeaching the president.
