Trump again rejects halting Saudi arms sale over Khashoggi case

However, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Saudi Arabia had not yet co-operated with Turkey on the search for Khashoggi.

The US president said he was "very upset and angry" about the case and indicated that he was not fully convinced by the Saudis' repeated claims of innocence.

Several companies including Bloomberg have pulled out of the event as media partners. He said Turkish "prosecutors and technical friends must enter" the consulate "and Saudi Arabia must co-operate with us on this".

Saudi Arabia has said it had nothing to do with Khashoggi's disappearance, without explaining or offering evidence of how the writer left the consulate and disappeared into Istanbul with his fiancee waiting outside.

Turkish sources have told Reuters the initial assessment of the police was that Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, had been deliberately killed inside the consulate.

Saudi Arabia is facing increasing worldwide pressure to clarify what happened to Khashoggi, with US President Donald Trump and British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt among those demanding answers.

He has also halted discussions about a $1bn ($NZ1.54b) investment by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund into Virgin's space ventures.

The spokesman of Erdogan's ruling party, Omer Celik, acknowledged Saturday that there were "extremely sensational claims" about Khashoggi's fate in the media and said there would be "severe consequences" for anyone found responsible if they were true. It's unclear how they obtained that evidence though.

However, the government has agreed to a joint investigation with the Saudis, and a Saudi delegation arrived in Turkey on Friday to take part in talks expected over the weekend.

I don't like the concept of stopping an investment of $110 billion into the United States, because you know what they're going to do?

Saudi Arabia and its allies broke off diplomatic ties with Qatar a year ago.

But while Trump is planning on going ahead with his deal, Congress has some tough words for him.

The watch is reported to have been connected to the iCloud and the cellphone that he left with his fiancee before he entered the consulate.

Separately, a video has emerged of men described as Saudi intelligence officers entering and leaving Turkey.

Cengiz said she and the journalist would have been married this week and had planned a life together split between Istanbul and the United States, where Khashoggi had been living in self-imposed exile since previous year.

Earlier, Turkish newspaper Sabah reported the missing Saudi journalist recorded the consulate episode on his smartwatch and the "interrogation, torture and possible killing was recorded and automatically sent to both his iPhone and cloud account".
