Storm Callum: More rain but worst of fatal storm passes

The storm has brought very strong winds and heavy rain in many places, with the western side of the country experiencing some of the strongest winds.

Natural Resources Wales said it was about 30 years since there was flooding "of this size and significance" after the flood defences in Carmarthen were breached by the river Towy for the first time since they were built.

Flooding and falling trees have seen major disruption across most rail services in Wales, while trains in Devon and Cornwall are also likely to be delayed.

Wind speeds hit 76mph on the Isles of Scilly as Storm Callum blew in during the early hours of Friday.

Northern Ireland's Health and Safety Executive issued guidance to businesses which could be affected by the storm.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for heavy rain in south Wales until 18:00 BST on Saturday.

The high winds, combined with heavy rain, could see leaves and other debris blocking drains, making flooding more likely.

Richard Brown, Pembrokeshire County Council's Head of Environmental Services and Public Protection, said that although Council staff would be working continuously to clear the roads, motorists would need to be vigilant.

The Met Office has warned that homes and offices are likely to be flooded, and fast flowing or deep floodwater could cause a danger to life.

There is one flood alert for the whole of the Scottish Borders, particularly the South and West and this could include properties but again is mainly focused on surface water.

"Here we could see up to 200mm or more in some localised area here and that could bring more flooding".

The south east has largely escaped Callum, however by Sunday afternoon there will be a "complete reversal in fortunes" with eastern and southeastern parts getting rainfall while western parts will be dry and sunny.

"Storm Callum" is the third storm of the 2018/19 season, with the strongest winds likely to hit western Ireland, although North Western parts of the United Kingdom can expect severe gales.
