Indonesia natural disaster: Huge 6.0 magnitude rocks volcanic Java island

Three people were killed and houses were damaged after a magnitude-6.3 quake off East Java province and Bali yesterday, rattling some hotels where delegates to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank meetings are staying.

In East Java, three people were crushed to death in their sleep when the quake brought down buildings in Sumenep district and sent people fleeing their homes.

Indonesia's disaster agency says the September 28 disaster that hit Sulawesi island has killed 2045 people.

Nugroho reiterated that the official search for bodies will end Thursday with prayers in hard-hit neighbourhoods.

Central Sulawesi was devastated when hit by a 7.5 magnitude quake last month which killed nearly 2000 people with hundreds more still missing.

On Dec. 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1 natural disaster struck the eastern coast of Sumatra, triggering a tsunami that killed around 230,000 people as it tore along the coasts of Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

According to local estimates, some 5,000 people remain missing in Balaroa and the town of Petobo.

If any reminder were needed of Indonesia's treacherous tectonics, a magnitude 6 quake struck off Java and Bali islands early on Thursday, killing three people in Java, damaging buildings and sparking panic.

"In other areas, the quake was felt to be moderate", reported Time.

No tsunami warning was issued for the quake.

Almost 90,000 people were displaced by the disaster, many sheltering in tents outside their destroyed homes.

Possibly 5,000 people were buried in places where the quake caused liquefaction, a phenomenon where wet soil weakens and collapses, becoming mud that sucks houses and everything else into the ground in a quicksand-like effect.

They were told "all foreign USAR teams should make their way obviously back to their countries".

"All the victims have undergone mass funerals and been buried by families", Sutopo said.

Foreign governments and global organisations should give a helping hand through aid, donations, volunteer work and humanitarian assistance. Groups that sent foreign personnel to the disaster zone are "advised to retrieve their personnel immediately", according to those guidelines.
