Storm Callum: Your hour by hour forecast for Edinburgh and the Lothians

A yellow warning remains in place across Northern Ireland and much of the United Kingdom until midnight as Storm Callum sweeps in from the Atlantic.

"Further warnings were considered across parts of the south and east later Friday, owing to another swathe of wind and rain".

Forecasters warned of heavy rain - up to four inches - and potential flooding in the wake of the storm.

The national emergency group includes Met Éireann, local authorities, the ESB, OPW and government.

Officials said the DGCA was probing the matter and the damage to the aircraft's belly, including the wheels, is being assessed. Flight IX 611, comprising 129 passengers and seven crew members, was diverted to and landed in Mumbai.


Both Met Éireann and Midland Weather Channel have issued severe weather warnings ahead of Storm Callum's arrival in Ireland tonight.

It's warning southeast winds veering southwest will gust generally between 100 and 130km/h, higher in some coastal areas and on high ground.

The forecast deluge poses a risk of communities being cut off by flooding, while widespread gales are expected to cause disruption across western areas of the UK.

Prolonged heavy rain is expected across much of the country on Friday and again on Saturday.

"This system is going to be moving in from the west bringing more persistent rain and very strong winds - you can see the isobars wrapped around that area of low pressure".

Met Office Shawbury said wind was expected to pick up on Friday along with outbreaks of rain.

A combination of winds up to 60 miles per hour and heavy rainfall are set to make driving conditions hazardous - including along the coast at times of high tides. The Warningsford Road, Banbridge is partially closed due to fallen trees, while there are also reports of a fallen tree on the Hillsborough Road, Monyreagh. "Road users should also be aware of the risk of their vehicles aquaplaning on standing water".

She said the west coast was "not out of the woods" in terms of strong winds and there was still a danger to people on the roads.
