Air India 737 makes emergency landing after hitting wall on takeoff

The aircraft took off early Friday from Trichy in Tamil Nadu when air traffic controllers warned the pilots they may have hit the wall.

Flight IX 611, comprising 129 passengers and seven crew members, was diverted to and landed in Mumbai.

The aircraft, which took off at 1:30 am was finally diverted to Mumbai at 5:35 am. The 130 passengers were moved to a new flight to Dubai.

Though the pilot in command "reported that the aircraft systems were operating normally, " there was a decision to divert the jet to Mumbai as a "precautionary measure".

"The pilot in command, Captain D Ganesh Babu, has a flying experience on the B737 aircraft of 3,600 hours, including about 500 hours as commander". Both pilots have been derostered pending investigation.

Officials said the DGCA was probing the matter and the damage to the aircraft's belly, including the wheels, is being assessed. The First Officer was Capt. Anurag who has an experience of about 3000 hours on the B 737.
