Two Britons killed in taxi among five dead in Majorca flash floods

At least five people were killed as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc on the Spanish island of Mallorca late on Tuesday, emergency services said.

Witnesses said that within minutes a rush of water and mud from an overflowing creek had buried cars and torn down trees.

A spokesman for the Spanish central government's office in the Balearic Islands told AFP nine people had died while six others had been formally identified as missing.

Dramatic video footage on social media shows raging torrents of water gushing through the streets of the town, with reports that more than 20 centimetres of rain fell in just four hours.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called news of the flooding "devastating " on Twitter: "My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all the affected by these tragic floods".

Swamped streets and piles of overturned cars, some of them along the guardrails of a major road, were a common sight in Sant Llorenc and other nearby towns on Wednesday.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal, who hails from the worst hit area in Mallorca, has offered to open up his sports centre and tennis academy to people affected by the floods.

Two of the victims were British, a senior official from the San Llorenc mayor's office, Antonia Bauza, told radio station Cadena Ser.

"We are grateful that we are all alive, but we pray for those that have lost their lives to this huge flood", Oliver said.

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in 35 counties along Florida's Panhandle and Big Bend regions. Scott also told Florida hospitals and nursing homes to do all they can to assure the safety of the elderly and infirm.

At least three towns closed schools and hundreds of people were given shelter in sport facilities.

Authorities said 80 soldiers and seven vehicles from the military's emergency unit had joined more than 100 rescuers who had been working in the area overnight. Spain's AEMET national weather service said that the probability of such an event "is one in a thousand years".
